Lone Worker Policy
- POLICY STATEMENT
Midcore Security and Facility Management is committed to protecting the health, safety, and welfare of all employees, including those who work alone. This policy sets out how risks linked to lone working are identified, managed, and controlled. The purpose of this policy is to ensure that risks associated with lone working are identified, assessed, and controlled, and that appropriate arrangements are in place to protect lone workers.
- SCOPE:
This policy applies to all employees, contractors, and subcontractors who work alone or without direct supervision while carrying out duties on behalf of Midcore Security and Facility Management.
- DEFINITION OF A LONE WORKER:
A lone worker is any individual who works by themselves without close or direct supervision. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Static security officers on single-manned sites
- Mobile patrol officers
- Officers working out of hours or overnight
- Officers working in remote or low-footfall locations
- MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
Management will:
- Carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments for all lone working roles
- Put control measures in place based on identified risks
- Provide training on lone working procedures and emergency actions
- Ensure reliable communication and monitoring systems are available
- Review lone working arrangements regularly
- EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES:
All lone workers must:
- Follow this policy and any site-specific instructions
- Take reasonable care of their own health and safety
- Use issued communication devices correctly
- Maintain agreed check-in procedures
- Report hazards, incidents, or concerns immediately
- RISK ASSESSMENT:
Risk assessments will consider:
- Nature of the task
- Location and environment
- History of incidents or violence
- Shift length and time of day
- Officer experience and training
Control measures may include:
- Regular check calls
- Mobile phones or radios
- Body-worn cameras where required
- Clear escalation procedures
All lone working risk assessments will be completed by management and reviewed regularly or following an incident.
- LONE WORKER MONITORING AND CHECK CALLS:
- Each lone worker will be monitored by the company Control Room, which is responsible for maintaining contact, logging check calls, and initiating escalation procedures where required.
- Check calls will be agreed based on risk level, normally not exceeding two hours
- All check calls must be logged accurately
- Failure to follow check call procedures will be treated as a safety issue
- MISSED CHECK CALLS AND ESCALATION:
If a check call is missed:
- Immediate attempts will be made to contact the officer
- If no response within 15 minutes, the issue will be escalated to a line manager
- Welfare checks or emergency services may be deployed if required
- All actions will be recorded
A post-incident review will be carried out to prevent recurrence.
- WELFARE ARRANGEMENTS:
Midcore Security and Facility Management will ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that lone workers have access to
- Suitable rest breaks
- Toilet and washing facilities where reasonably practicable
- Drinking water
- Clear arrangements for meals on longer shifts
- TRAINING AND AWARENESS:
All lone workers will receive training covering:
- Lone working risks
- Personal safety and situational awareness
- Use of communication equipment
- Emergency and escalation procedures
Refresher training will be provided as required.
- INCIDENT REPORTING:
All incidents, near misses, threats, or safety concerns must be reported in line with company reporting procedures. These will be investigated and reviewed.
- POLICY REVIEW:
This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if there are changes in legislation, working practices, or business operations.
The Managing Director shall approve this policy annually .
